About Common Measure
We publish slow, useful stories about the places we pass through and the things we live with.
Common Measure is a small editorial journal about the parts of daily life that become more interesting when you give them time: a repeated walk, a useful cupboard, a familiar street, a changing horizon.
We publish practical essays and field notes about places, home, food, photography and ordinary routines. The emphasis is on observation rather than novelty — ideas that are useful enough to try and quiet enough to return to.
There is no fixed formula for a Common Measure story. Some begin with a route through a city, some with an object on a shelf, and some with a habit that makes a week run more smoothly. What connects them is attention to how things are actually used and experienced.
Three editorial principles
- Specific over sweeping. We prefer one well-observed street, room, recipe or book to a list of things you “must” do.
- Useful without rushing.Practical details matter, but so does the pleasure of reading them.
- Ordinary is enough.A walk, a shelf, a market bag or a quiet morning can hold a complete story.
